Nicola Paganini: Polacca for – viola, violoncello and guitar
Niccolò Paganini (1782-1840): Serenata in C for viola, violoncello, guitar and Terzetto Concertant for viola, violoncello, guitar
In this program you will encounter a different Niccolò Paganini, the composer who became notorious for his super virtuosic pieces, the more human, the more romantic composer. These pieces, written for this very unique instrumentation, were never meant to be performed in a grand concert hall. They were composed for intimate private parties and weddings. The Serenata was written for the wedding of his sister Domenica in 1808, the manuscript includes a small movement, Polacca, written by Niccolòs’ granddaughter Nicola Paganini. The Terzetto Concertante was written in 1833, in an era that is actually very parallel to ours right now: the era of the 2nd wave of the cholera pandemic. Paganini performed numerous benefit concerts for the cholera victims and their families. The concert will be performed on historical instrumentation, including an original Guadagnini guitar from 1812 and an Italian viola made in Brescia in 1820.
